I'm a bit late in replying but I'm a "passenger" on public transport because I don't own a car! I'm not young however I'm not entitled to the Pensioners card. I gave up my car in mid 2004 or thereabouts........
And I'm fairly disappointed with the increased costs that just keep on happening.
I used to travel with Urban Express mostly the 009 and found that the drivers were extremely friendly, that they went out of their way for me at times. I had a monthly pass with them.....
I'm now having to use Stagecoach because my needs have changed, I don't like the Stagecoach system at all. Their maintenance of the buses is dreadful - some seats need urgent attention as do the buses themselves. Some of the drivers are right mean!
I'm about to use your NakedBus company on a trip out of town so that will be adventure in itself.
Although I'm near a train station, I don't care to stand during rush hour and it's not convenient to my new destination at the other end.

Comment on Overlander myopia by Jon

Very valid point you make, and one I totally agree with.

Having lived in Continental Europe for the best part of 9 years, and most of that in Switzerland and France, I am used to rail services NOT being marketed on begining and end destination, but all points in between. I could never imagine the train from Geneva to Zurich being marketed in that way.

The Overlander, as you point out, should be marketed according to the region it passes through. For example, in Hamilton it should be marketed as the best way to head to the mountains for tramping, or to Auckland for a night out. In National Park it could be marketed as the most scenic service to Palmerston North, Te Kuiti or the like.

Perhaps Toll NZ marketing agency is full of young guns that grew up in the era of flying point to point and have not recognised the potential, or Toll do not really want it to be a success? Either way, I am now at the point of thinking, if Toll does not want the services, Ontrack should take control. Rail is important for New Zealand, just New Zealand does not recognise it yet.

I think the Overlander has been saved so Toll NZ prevents any other potential operators arriving on the scene.

However, while it has the Auckland - Wellington line tied up, the Auckland - Tauranga line is open for another operator to turn up on the scene. This line would actually provide an operator a better return that Auckland - Wellington for a number of reasons:

1) Rapid turn around of service ( Leg journey time approx 3:30hrs )
2) Service the expanding Auckland, Hamilton and Tauranga regions
3) Could run right through to the Mount
4) Could connect at The Strand ( Tauranga CBD) with coach services to other BOP towns.

And once that route has been established, the operator could then grow into the Auckland - Rotorua line. Once Ontrack realises an operator wants to use the line (currently mothballed), within 6 to 8 weeks the line could be re-opened.

Will Nakedbus become Nakedtrain as well?

I must say I am most impressed with the low fees. A lot cheaper then the other big competitor ;). I have managed to book a trip from Rotorua to Palmerston North, then from Wellington to Rotorua for $2.70. I think that is pretty awesome!

We use modern coaches, with 18-49 seats depending on the service. On some services we use minibuses. They are all comfortable with coach style seating and air conditioning.

Thanks for your comments - Emily, no, though it might make some trips more interesting, you don't have to travel naked! "nakedbus" refers to stripping out the unnecessary costs; plus we think that once you hear the name you won't forget it. Anyway thanks for spreading the word :-)

About time NZ caught up with the rest of the world for cheap travel... nakedbus is EXCELLENT, thanks. I've told everyone I know about it.. the reaction was 'what's the catch... do you have to travel naked?' No, right?
